For nearly two decades, they have consistently demonstrated their unwavering commitment to sourcing barley locally. This release, the Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2013, marks the eighth edition of their unpeated single malt whisky crafted from barley grown in the vicinity.
Although each expression from individual growing seasons possesses subtle distinctions, a distinctive profile has emerged over time, characterized by a blend of maritime and citrus notes, with barley at the forefront, within these intricate single malts.
The latest vintage of unpeated Bruichladdich Islay Barley showcases barley harvested during the 2012 growing season, which was subsequently distilled in 2013. This barley crop was cultivated across seven different farms on the island, managed by dedicated farmers: Hunter Jackson at Cruach, Andrew and Donald Jones at Coull, Mark French at Rockside, Ian McKerrell at Island, Alistair Torrance at Mulindry, Raymond Fletcher at Dunlossit, and Raymond Stewart at Sunderland.
The resulting spirit underwent maturation in a combination of ex-American and ex-European oak casks, aging gracefully over a span of eight years.

After being closed in 1986, the distillery resumed production in 2008. This Revival bottling represents the first whisky to be crafted at the distillery since its reopening. Batch 3 of the Virgin Oak Series unveils a mahogany-hued malt enriched with spicy, treacly flavors, a result of its maturation in hogsheads crafted from Spanish Oak (Quercus Robur). The oak was meticulously air-dried for approximately 18 months, followed by toasting and charring to a medium level. Tasting Note by Bunnahabhain:Nose: Scents of rich sherry, blossoming into sweet caramel and polished leather.Palate: An initial taste of sweet berries and cream that evolves into a feast of roasted nuts and malt.Finish: Soft and dry with a delicate hint of sweet sugar and spiced oak that linger long on the tongue.
This distinctive malt, matured solely in hand-selected sherry casks for a remarkable 25 years, represents a significant addition to the Glengoyne lineup. It is showcased in a newly designed, substantial bottle and outer packaging. The bottle is adorned with a finely crafted metal stopper, an intricate cartouche, and a subtly branded neck tag, all elegantly presented within an oak box interior featuring an engraved plinth. The outer packaging boasts an exquisite feather pattern with subtle varnish accents.
Tasting Note by Glengoyne:Nose: Red Fruits, old leather and brown sugar.Palate: Soft oak, cinnamon, stewed fruits and a Seville marmalade tang.Finish: Very long, with spicy liquorice, slowly drying.
In their whisky-making process, the distillery opts for the finest virgin French oak casks.
A journey of maturation begins in American White Oak ex-bourbon casks before a portion of the whisky is transferred into six different virgin oak casks sourced from various regions in France.
The outcome is a whisky known for its fruity and spicy qualities, with distinct flavors including crème caramel, baked peach, and sweet liquorice.
Tasting Note by Jura:Nose: An aromatic fusion of coffee, ginger spice and a hint of milk chocolate.Palate: Crème caramel, baked peach, liquorice and candied orange.
Unfortunately I can't review the whisky itself, as it joins my collection. However, I can't fault the quality service by JPHA. Especially as I got it at such a good price. I'll be keeping an eye on this online shop.

Color me impressed with Willett Family Estate 4 Year Rye – it’s fantastic. It’s a very interesting, dense, and unique rye that hits all the right rye whiskey notes for me yet adds a unique twist with added lemon, fennel, caraway seed, and general darkness.

Flavours which burst on your tongue
This Malt slowly erupts on your taste buds giving you a smooth yet vibrant flavour of sweet Sherry and an after taste of Oloroso, with a hint of oak.
Its dark colour gives it a warm feel. Personally I prefer it at room temperature without either water or ice.
